There are many reasons we love Nate Berkus Associates' design directors Sasha Adler and Lauren Gold. Among them: the fact that they are style-savvy, beyond nice, and just plain freaking adorable. But the gals’ numero uno appeal is, of course, the fact that they can design a drop-dead room like no one’s business. As Sir Nate’s right-hand women, the Chicago-based duo are responsible for executing the firm’s high-profile projects with aplomb. We’re talking lushly layered, perfectly balanced, and utterly chic perfection (just check out these snapshots from their portfolio). Here, a quick Q&A with the talented designers.
What’s your approach to decorating?
Our style is eclectic, warm, collected and layered. Much like our approach to fashion, it reflects a very classic and timeless foundation paired with an extraordinary attention to detail. While we are constantly inspired by new things, we never want our interiors to feel too ‘of a moment,’ because inevitably trends pass quickly. We constantly ask ourselves, ‘will we love this 100 years from now?’
In your opinion, what “makes” a room?
Personal touches always make the room. You can design a beautiful space, but if it doesn’t reflect the person who lives there, it feels lifeless and uninviting. We love to help our clients tell their story through furniture, objects, books and artwork to create an interior that is uniquely their own.
Who is your dream client?
Ashley or Mary-Kate Olsen. We think they both have impeccable, personal, style and we would love to translate that to their interiors.
If you could design your no expense-spared dream closet, what would it look like?
Our dream closet would feature high-gloss painted millwork with brass inlay, original Mercury glass inset in the door fronts, and custom rock crystal hardware. We would love to have a Maison Jansen settee upholstered in a vibrant silk velvet and a Louis XV bureau plat as a vanity, as well as amazing Mid-Century lighting to add a modern element.
