clos-ette case: Style Me Pretty's Abby Larson

Posted on March 26, 2012 by Melanie Charlton

As the Clos-ette team gears up for some very important weddings this summer, we find ourselves positively dazzled (a.k.a. obsessed) with Yes, the site is the mother of all bridal blogs –think vendor guides, dress look-books, and real weddings galore –but it’s also an amazing destination for fashion and design aficionados who aren't planning their Big Day. The stunning photography, exquisite floral arrangements, and pitch-perfect color palettes are nothing short of inspirational –and don’t even get us started on the cakes. Abby Larson, the founder and editor of the web phenomenon (see: 17 million page views per month) is also bringing her eye for all-things-gorg to the marketplace: her curated collection of bridesmaid dresses for Dessy is chic and entirely re-wearable, and her new line of invitations for William Arthur makes us want to throw a party, stat. Here, the queen bee of the online bridal industry opens up about her personal style, favorite pieces, and more.

What’s your trademark look?

Casual, through and through. As a blogger who spends the vast majority of her time tied to her sofa, a great pair of jeans (my fave  pairs are Goldsign and Citizens of Humanity), a comfortable but cute tee (love me some American Apparel, but also go back to my tried and true James Perse), and hair tied neatly in a very messy braid.

What’s the most cherished item in your wardrobe, and why?

My watch. It’s a Cartier watch that my husband gave me for my thirtieth birthday. It was our first grown-up accessory purchase and just the idea that he went to the store, chose this beautiful piece of jewelry that is neither masculine nor feminine so it can go with absolutely everything, warms my heart. With a great pair of jeans it looks timeless. With a dressed up ensemble, it looks classic. It’s just one of those things that I’ll wear for the rest of my life.

Is there a color theme in your closet?

I have a ton of white. Tait, my husband, always says that I look pretty in white, which makes me smile. And black because who doesn't love a great black anything? I also have a three-year old daughter whose obsession with the color pink is getting a little dangerous, [as] my wardrobe is slowly perking up with some pink hues.

When it comes to closet clutter (i.e. "things I will never wear again"), bridesmaid dresses are a major culprit. Your thoughts?

You know what? Bridesmaids dresses are really cute now! It’s absolutely possible to wear them again. J. Crew, BHLDN, Vera Wang, and Dessy all make absolutely adorable frocks that you can dress up or dress down for another event. I always encourage brides to be thoughtful about that $200 purchase that their maids are about to make. Choose a dress that is timeless and that doesn't scream bridesmaid. How do you store your wedding dress?

Preserving and storing a wedding dress is super important when it comes to giving your gown the best chance possible for survival. You should have your gown professionally cleaned and preserved through a reputable launderer. The gown should always be kept in a cool, dry place with minimal sunlight. Dampness, heat and direct sunlight will turn the fabric and will make it un-wearable over a period of time.

What’s the best style advice you’ve ever heard?

"The beauty of a woman is not in the clothes she wears, the figure that she carries, or the way she combs her hair. The beauty of a woman is seen in her eyes, because that is the doorway to her heart, the place where love resides." -Audrey Hepburn

Whose closet would you like to raid?

Rachel Zoe’s. Because I’m quite sure that it’s major.
