clos-ette case: David Phoenix

Interior designer David Phoenix calls his style “California Elegance.”  To which we say, amen brother. Because really, what’s more inviting than a blend of the easy, the laidback and the warm, with a heaping dose of the oh-so-chic? Every time we collaborate with the L.A. designer, we’re struck by the cozy yet refined living spaces that are his specialty. (Clients like actor Rob Lowe and assorted Kennedys must agree). Here, Phoenix chats with us about his clothing collections, dream closet, and more.

What’s your personal style?

Traditional. My mantra is ‘quality and comfort.’

Who are your go-to designers?

I like Ralph Lauren, Brioni, Loro Piana, and Brunello Cucinelli.

What’s your shopping weakness?

I’d say shoes. I’m a big shoe person. I also collect shirts and belts, and have a great cashmere sweater collection that I’ve added to over the years.

Don't you just want to curl up in this room?

What’s your favorite investment piece?

I have a couple of great leather jackets, and some great bags from Hermès, Louis Vuitton, and Bottega.

What would your dream closet look like?

It would be all millwork and very luxurious specimen wood. I would do wooden floors with area rugs, and wrapped leather insets maybe in the counter tops. I’d have sections for dressy suits, casual, and work-out wear.

Is there anything in your closet that’s past its expiration date?

No. I purge all the time. I try not to hang onto things just to hang onto them. In fact, I just gave nine garbage bags to a men’s shelter.

Whose closet would you like to raid?

I’ve actually been in Mr. Armani’s closet before, and I thought it was great. I’d like to raid Valentino’s closet because he’s one of my favorite tastemakers. Tom Ford, too.
